Watford are in advanced talks over signing former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jake Livermore.

The former England international is a free agent following the expiry of his contract at The Hawthorns at the end of June.

The 33-year-old is currently training with Watford with a view to finalising a one-year deal.

Livermore would bring experience to the team following the retirement of Tom Cleverley, who is now expected to take up an academy coaching role with the club.

Craig Cathcart also left Watford at the end of his contract, with newly promoted Championship side Ipswich Town one of the teams interested in signing him.

Livermore made more than 200 appearances for West Brom — including 37 last season — since signing from Hull City in 2017.

He began his career at Tottenham before loan spells at Derby County, Ipswich Town and Leeds United.

Watford have started pre-season ahead of the 2023-24 campaign under new head coach Valerien Ismael.

They finished 11th last season in the Championship, six points adrift of the play-off places.

Rhys Healey has already joined on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract at Toulouse while Tom Ince has also arrived from relegated Reading.
