Nicholas Charles Sparks was born in Omaha, Nebraska in December 1965. His sister Dana passed away at 33 from a brain tumor and inspired the novel A Walk to Remember. Nicholas was the valedictorian of his high school class and attended the University of Notre Dame on a track and field scholarship. He graduated with honors in 1988. In 1985 he wrote his first novel which was never published. He worked in real estate, as a waiter, and selling dental products over the phone. He co-wrote Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding in 1990 and the book was published. As a pharmaceutical salesman he wrote the novel The Notebook. In 1996 the book was published and it made the New York Times best-seller list its first week. Sparks has had eight of his books made into movies: Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, The Last Song, The Lucky One, and Safe Haven. His 18th novel, The Longest Ride, was published in 2013. Nicholas married Cathy Cote in 1989 and have three sons and twin daughters. He and his wife donated nearly $10 million to start The Epiphany School of Global Studies. He was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2012.
